2019 Goals – Skill Building and Getting Involved

Happy last day of 2018! Since it’ll be the new year in just a few hours, I wanted to make a quick list of goals for the coming year. I’m usually not into new year resolutions – if you want to make a change, make it now and don’t wait for next year, next month, or next week. Find an actionable way to work towards that goal, as soon as you can.

These goals are mostly ones I am already working towards, and want to continue improving on in the coming year. While some are broad goals, they all have small, actionable steps that I can take to achieve them, and will be easily implementable into my daily or weekly routine.

Volunteer

This coming year, I would like to try out some different volunteering opportunities. To start off, I’ve signed up to be a front-end web development mentor at Code Louisville. This will give me a chance to see if I like mentoring/teaching, as well as give me insight into how other front-end developers approach their work.

I have also been investigating volunteer opportunities revolving around children/childcare, which I plan to take part in later in the year, after Code Louisville.

Advance German Skills

A few months ago I took part in a German class, and while it was a worthwhile experience, it also cost money, wasn’t flexible on dates/times, and had a small attendance. I’ve picked a date to try out the German Conversation Group meetup, and if all goes well I plan to continue to attend. I also have a friend who moved to Germany last year and am going to see if she would like to do some Skype calls and practice our German together.

Have More “New”

In 2019, I want to go to new places, meet new people, and do new things. This is a goal that I don’t yet have any concrete steps for. It’ll be met in part by participating in Code Louisville and the German Conversation Group, but I would also like to do more traveling and exploring with Will, even just within our city. This is something I’ll have to be conscious about, as we’ve realized that if we don’t have anything scheduled, we generally just stay home.

Draw

The second part of this year, I’ve been really good about drawing regularly and I would like that to continue. Not necessarily every day, but at least multiple times per week. I find the act of drawing relaxing and enjoy developing the skill.

Blog

I’ve done all right so far keeping up with semi-regular posts. I’d like to create a more rigid posting schedule to ensure it stays that way. I’ll add reminders to my calendar, and continue adding to my document of blog post ideas to make sure I always have something I can write about.

Of course there are many other things I would ideally work on in 2019 – exercising more, cooking more, less screen time, etc – but having only a few goals to concentrate on will set me up for success in the new year. Here’s to a great 2019!
